-japanese protests started causing a protest of japanese protests and those who use them. and the protests are so bad that a chinese man made the simple mistake of driving a japanese car in a chai neads city of chian and was beat sewn badly he is paralyzed. this week, a chinese minister accused a japanese vessel of target i targeting the radar on a japanese ship off of the islands, but the chinese officials are disputing it happened. now think about this, the world's second and the third largest economies playing chicken in the pacific over a dispute of uninhabited islands, but if this diplomatic disagreement were to escalate into a military obligation, the united states would be obligated by the 52-year-old treaty obligation to help the sovereignty of japan, and does that mean that north korea would come to the aid of china, but it is a quaint and admittedly alarmist experiment, because that is not how foreign wars are conducted anymore. next month marks the 10-year invasion of iraq, and the last conflict that we can think of conventional war that claimed the lives of more than 4,000 americans and b

you this earnings season. i wanted to offer you a new way to use earnings season, to put it in perspective, because most of you watching the show are not these day traders that i think really hijack a lot of the thinking. you're not trying to game a given quarter. it's become so difficult to predict, and often the initial moves aren't even accurate because of the press coverage or because something nasty occurred in the overall market because of europe or something involved with the election. in other words, other than those who are shorting or going long stocks ahead of the quarter, these earnings reports need a context to make you money. they can't be relied upon anymore because they aren't as predictive of future behavior as they once were. they are a piece of the puzzle, a part of the mosaic, but they are only one of many important parts of what predicts where a stock will go over the intermediate term. that tends to be the focus that i teach on the show. and it is a teaching show because i want you to know the metrics i'm using to pick stocks i talk about and recomme

investors and ben white, chief economic correspondent at politico. also here with us is david joy. it's great to have all you guys here. phil, why has the rally stalled? >> well, we've gotten out of the gate in terrific shape here. the stock market, the s&p is up about 6% the first six weeks or so of the year. we've got a very constructive full year forecast of 1660 on the s&p, which would be a record high. but we didn't think we were going to go straight there. the reality is that we've had a terrific run. the markets are a little bit tired. you've got some washington-related news coming up over the next month or so. we would expect that this would be a perfect opportunity for, you know, a 3% to 5% pause. and i think we're starting to see that reflected -- >> up to 5% is almost the whole thing. >> well, look, a week from now, president obama is going to do his state of the union address, okay? typically the market doesn't respond well when the president talks. then we're going to start to get into some of the nitty-gritty, some of the spending issues. that would be a perfect opportun
